Easy Reporting

Hello,

I am searching for a reporting tool in which I can graphically and easily report on the cubes built using SQL Server Analysis Services. I don't want build complex reports using SSRS, but instead use something like MS Office Data Analyzer. The version of Data Analyzer I have goes back to 2001. I am able to view reports based on SQL 2005 SSAS but was wondering if there is a new version of this product or perhaps a totally new product that does the same job and is as easy.

Many Thanks,

Grace

Easy Report parameter Question

Im trying to hard code a Year in as an available value for the user to pick out of a drop down box. This is what i have so far.

Label Value

Travel Year 2006

well i want to go ahead and put two value for that one label , like this:

Label Value

Travel Year 2006, 2007

How do i do this? I tried putting a comma, and i tried putting a semi colon, but it always just grabs the first number "2006".

I know it cant be this hard! please help! THanks!

Enter another Label/Value combination like this:

Label Value

TravelYear 2006

TravelYear 2007

or you could write a little query to do it.

|||

ok, this is actually not what im writing, i just tried to explain it in a simpler way, this is what i want

Label Value

Task National TN001, TN002, TN003, TN004, TN005, TN006, TN007

Task Vet TV001,TV002, TV003, TV004, TV005

Survey National SN001, SN002, SN003, SN004, SN005

and so on

Its a way of grouping the same type of tasks together in the parameter, so the user doesnt have to individually go through a long list of codes.

THere should be away to put one option with multiple values.

|||

You could manually create a dataset like this:

Select 'Task National' as Label, 'TN001, TN002, TN003, TN004, TN005, TN006, TN007' as Value

union

Select 'Task Vet' as Label, 'TV001,TV002, TV003, TV004, TV005' as Value

union

Select 'Survey National' as Label, 'SN001, SN002, SN003, SN004, SN005' as Value

Then parse the values and use them.

|||

I ended up just putting it in the where clause like this

Code Snippet

WHERE REGION_KEY=@.Region_Key

AND LEFT(Qry_Questions.[Question Code],2)IN (@.QuestionCode)

so it grouped the ones with the same 2 first letters. Works great!|||Nice job. Sometimes you have to be a little creative to get things to work right. :-)

Easy query help... :(

Hi,

I'm trying to write a sql query to create a report that will act kind of like a Mail Merge in Microsoft Word. I want to send letters to our customers to remind them their machines need to be ballbar'd or calibrated.

My database is set up as follows:

CustomerInformation(CustomerID[pk], CompanyName, CompanyPhone, etc etc etc)

CustomerMachine(MachineID[pk], MachineManufacturer, MachineModel, MachineSerialNumber, MachineSize, CustomerID[fk])

LaserCalibrations(LaserID[pk], LaserDate, MachineID[fk])

Ballbars(BallbarID[pk], BallbarDate, MachineID[fk])

My query looks like this:

SELECT CustomerInformation.CustomerID, CustomerMachine.CustomerID, CustomerMachine.MachineID, CustomerMachine.MachineManufacturer, CustomerMachine.MachineModel, CustomerMachine.MachineSerialNumber, CustomerMachine.MachineSize, LaserCalibrations.LaserID, LaserCalibrations.LaserDate, LaserCalibrations.MachineID

FROM CustomerInformation, CustomerMachine, LaserCalibrations

WHERE (((CustomerInformation.CustomerID)=CustomerMachine .CustomerID) And ((CustomerMachine.MachineID)=LaserCalibrations.Mac hineID))
ORDER BY CustomerInformation.CompanyName, LaserCalibrations.LaserDate;

The problem is that it will not print the laser calibration dates in order. I wanted to include a history of past service on the letter. I tried to write the query including ballbars, but it got too messy, I think I was missing a "Distinct" descripter. I also want to change the price according to the size of the machine... and I'm not certain how to go about doing that.

Please help :)

Thanks!you have here two unrelated one-to-many relationships that cannot easily be combined in one query

if a single machine has 3 LaserCalibrations and 4 Ballbars, the query will return 12 rows for that machine

you need two separate queries, one for LaserCalibrations and a separate one for Ballbars

Easy Problem I Should think, cr11 vb6 image

In a nutshell

I have a report, and a vb6 which calls it, thou the results are not the same, when called from vb6, other then just opening in cr and runing it.. The only thing which is different is that the dynamic location images, does not appear, everything else does ?

In a Sea Sure Shell

Vb does not pass anything to the report, because the report always looks at the same database (mdb) when it runs, infact i just fill the database as i want with vb, and then call the report..

Its just one record in a 6 colum type, all text fields, one date time field..
All of which show fine, apart from one, being a txt field which contains a location of a picture such as C:\Pics\blah.jpg

But this does not show on the report when called, just the other records..

I am using the new Image Location field in cr11, which i've used lots, so i know the reports right and works fine, because like i said, if i preview in cr itself, it works great..

So the problem must be when i call it, in my vb program, i have the following code

======Code=============
Dim oApp As CRAXDRT.Application
Dim oReport As CRAXDRT.Report

Set oApp = New CRAXDRT.Application
Set oReport = oApp.OpenReport("C:\offer.rpt", 1)

crvMyCRViewer.ReportSource = oReport
crvMyCRViewer.ViewReport

frmPrint.Show
======End Code==========

Which shows it on the screen, but with no pictures, i've checked the database, file path is fine

anyways come across this b4 ???

Any help on this would be great

thanks for your timewow paul, your so good looking|||stop that, this is a serious question|||look like no ones know mr paul|||i'll cry if no ones help :-(|||anyone ? i lose my job, if i dont work this out by 2morrow :(|||well thanks for your help everyone, i worked it out myself, and as i'm nice, i'll tell you how incase anyone else has this problem in the furture.. its just taken me 2 days to work this out

but because i had cr10, then 11 and both were installed it seem, i had a ref to cr viewer and active x dll's 10 and not 11, so althougth the report showed, ofcouse the advanced thing which comes with v11, does not work such as the dynamic image location.

So i got my hands on verison 11 of both dll's and it work, ta da

easy parameter Q

I think this is probably easy but haven't found the setting yet and am
running out of time.
My report has a column I want to use as a parameter(parameter query). The
value of the field repeats several times and I want to limit the drop down
list to the first occurance of each value.
Hope this is an easy one.Have you tried select Distinct(column) ?

Thanks for your reply. I am using report parameters and am not sure how to
use a distinct() within the confines of the the parameter options. If you can
help I would much appriciate it.
I don't want to affect the report query but rather the parameter drop-down
menu options.

multiple datasets to populate your parameters.
then change your parameter properties to use the new data set. select the
parameter you want to change, then click the From Query radio button, select
the new dataset name under dataset, select the Value Field value and the
label field. This is generally an Id and description.
hope that helps.. there should be something thats helps in the help files

Easy One I hope - What to Use?

Hi
Need to create a report that needs to show the following:
# of results # of results >5 % of
results >5 Mean of
within 5 days days days
Results
Jan
Feb
March
April etc
What is the best dataregion to use?
CheersPlease check my response on your "matrix expression problem".
I would however think that using a table for this case is easier than using
a matrix.

Easy but Im new...

Hi All,

So I'm only a beginner at Crystal but here it goes: I am writing a report for the Helpdesk that tells them the amount of issues they need to escalate out of their group. I had to do a TrimRight({Column}20 to 35) and also added a TRIM to cut out any leading or ending spaces.

This part worked great, exactly what I needed, but now I need to match that value from the formula with a column in a database. The value gives me back a login name such as TBARLOW. I now need to match that value to the loginid column and see if it matches anything in that column.

IF {@.Trim} = {Support_Staff.Login ID} then
{Incident_Details.From Group:}

There are no errors in the formula...so basically I need it to say: take @.trim and find that value in the {Support_Staff.Login ID} field.

Any help would be great,
Thanks so much,
Timwell 2 things - do you know if {Support_Staff.Login ID} has any leading or ending spaces? As common practice (espcecially if comparing) I always use TRIM on each field. I.E.

If {@.Trim} = trim({Support_Staff.Login ID}) then ...

the second thing - and maybe this is just a typo - Is {Support_Staff.Login ID} supposed to be {Support_Staff.LoginID} or maybe {Support_Staff.Login_ID}? If you just double clicked on the field in the Report Fields, then it should be right, if you just typed it in thought there might be a problem. As far as I know, most databases don't like spaces in the field names.sql

Easy Admin Question

OK, As an Admin on the server, domain, SQL Server and Reportin
Services, when I log into the Report Manager website, I see the folder
"User Folders". I can navigate into that and see everyone's personal
"My Reports" folders.
Now, I have made a developer a Reporting Services Admin by adding him
to the RS Site Role of "System Admin" so that he can modify and
extract some user's reports that they saved in their My Reports
location.
For some reason he is unable to see the "User Folders" folder. I have
verified he is assigned to the System Admin role in RS so I'm unsure
what else I need to do to allow him to see the "User Folders" folder.
Any help anyone could provide is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
MartinSystem Administrator role does not include permissions to access catalog
items.
Quoting BOL (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156470.aspx)
The System Administrator role is a predefined role that includes tasks that
are useful for a report server administrator who has overall responsibility
for a report server, but not necessarily for the content within it.

So after reading that and messing around with all the settings, I was
finely able to get it working. Had to set permissions at the Folder
and Report levels so that I, as an Admin, could 'control' a user's
reports they created and stored in their My Folders location.
Thanks for the link. It helped in my understanding and tracking this
down.

Early User Questions for developing large number of reports

Hi All,
Firstly, let me say who we are.....a group of us are developing a BI
product where we have decided to use Report Services as the reporting
tool. We are long term BI experts and IT consultants......We are
experienced in all manner of reporting and query tools we are just new
to RS. We settled on RS as our 'lower end' reporting tool for our
product and we will give our clients the 'option' of selecting other
reporting tools but the 'out of the box' reports will be in RS.
We have been dilligent and done our reading (WROX RS book) and testing
and figured out most of what we want to do. We have our first report up
and running and we are learning what the limits of RS seem to be to us.
So hopefully I will not ask too many 'dumb' questions... :-)
We also hope by asking questions here that other users of RS might also
benefit from the public discussion.
Q1. We are also working on our 'templates' for reports and looking at
how we develop a large number (200-300) of reports according to a
'template'. In the WROX Book they talk about codesmith and a way of
handling templates. But we didn't 'get' it...Also, when we try using
the VS.NET report wizard it seems that it insists on a query rather
than a stored procedure for it's data for the wizard to work.
So we are thinking we need to write each report by copying the rdl xml,
editting it by hand and then putting it into vs.net to further edit.
We have no real problem with that but we were thinking someone must
have come up with a better idea than editing the XML by now!!!
Has anyone published papers/ideas/tools (fee or free) to manage the
development and deployment of large numbers of reports?
Q2. We see MSFT has been out talking up RS2005/SQL Server 2005 and
talking about the pricing of SQL Server 2005. But we have not seen any
comment on the possible cost of RS2005 if it is NOT purchased with SQL
Server 2005. We would like to have the option of deploying our product
onto SQL Server with RS running either on that machine or elsewhere. Is
there any public comment from MSFT as to the possible pricing of RS2005
when not purchased with SQL Server?
Q3. Is there any published information on 'best practice' or 'best
examples of usage' of report services? For example MicroStrategy,
Business Objects etc post demos of their products to showcase the 'best
possible use' of the product. Dundas have also put out some really
great demos. But the RS demos from MSFTs web site look a little
'plain' especially the graphics. Are there any really great examples
of RS 'out there' or are the demos on the MSFT web site the best there
is? We have decided to go with DNN for the portal and we are currently
testing RS/DNN integration.
Q4. Layout of prompts on a report.
We have reports with quite a few prompts and they are 'grouped'. For
example we have a set of 4 prompts for the user to select the levels in
the company reporting structure. ANd then we have prompts for the
client to select year and month. Then we might have campaign structure
selection which is 3 levels....so we would like to lay out
Line 1: 4 prompts
Line 2: 2 Prompts
Line 3: 3 prompts
We are told this is not supported...but it also seems like it only
ever places two prompts on one line? If we cannot group prompts can we
at least get it to put more than 2 prompts per line?
Thanks in Advance
Peter Nolan
www.peternolan.comRS is like most of the other MS products: a "back-end" tool with high
custimization available. You can extend it from many way.
Q2:
The licensing is the same as 2000. RS is part of SQL 2005 and if you want
report capabilities only, you have to buy a license of SQL 2005. But the RS
repository required SQL Server.
So for your answer, yes RS can be purchased "separatly" but at the full
price of SQL 2005.
Q3:
On the MS web site, there is some samples reports for different usage:
CRM, Exchange, Axapta, SQL Logs, RS logs.
Best pratices & usages depend on your needs.
Designing printing reports is different from web based usage only reports.
Today there is nothing except simple samples. But these small samples don't
limit me to use RS.
Generally I start from an overall report, then I link to detailed reports.
Q4:
Create you own prompt page if you want to create a specific layout.
Remember that RS is designed for developpers to include reporting capability
into their applications.
But there is a lack of sample and helps to create front end tools around RS.

Q2. In licensing MSFT talks about buying RS when it needs to be
deployed on a server other than the SQL Server...and the WROX book
talks about this as being a 'medium' sized deployment.....if that
means that we need to buy a full SQL Server license (I guess workgroup)
to run RS on a separate server that's ok...we just wanted to
know....but that seems a bit pricey....
Q4. I found examples on odetocode web site but most of the examples I
am finding are 'fragments' intended for developers to include into
already designed/built apps.....that's ok..if there are no other
examples out there we can start from where we are at...just wanted to
check there was not something more publicly available before we spent
our time and effort...it's kind of suprising MSFT has not published
some more things to give developers a better base to work from to go up
against the likes of Crystal/Business Objects/Cognos...maybe more is
coming'

Each Record on New Page

I have designed a report which is picking up the records from a sharepoint list with around 40-50 fields in it. As I was not able to fit all in a list view, therefore I designed the report in a profile view. I did this by using tables and putting the fields in the 'header' of the table rather than the 'Detail' section.

The report is looking quite good. As there can be more then one records I use the 'Last' function in order to ensure that the latest records are displayed.

What shall I do if I want to display all the records. Meaning each record can come on a new page. Is there something I can do, to do this.

Thanks

Amad

Set the PageBreakAtEnd property to true on each table you have.

|||

I need to display different blocks of information. e.g. Student Basic Information, Student Contact Information, Student Course Information etc.

For each block I have a made a separate table. I have rows of 'Header' type since if I take the 'Details' type of rows then rows will be displayed on one page. All the blocks of information are displayed on one page. Therefore each page contains information for one student

By your solution its giving a page break between two tables (or groups of information). What I want, is to display each student int a new page.

Thanks

|||

IIRC you can set grouping information on a list control, so you can place your tables in a list control, set the grouping to student name or ID, and have a page break at the end of each list.

Each date on its own report page?

I am wondering how to set a page break so that when a date range is selected (01/04/06 to 30/04/06) each day would show up on it's own page with the date at the top? Is this possible?
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA
TaraDo you want to have every date in the range to have its own page even if there's no corresponding data for that date?
This isn't too difficult but I won't elaborate unless it's what you really want.

If you merely want each new (record) date in the range on its own page then group by the date. Change the Group options to be printed 'for each day' and check 'Repeat Group Header On Each Page'.
In the section expert, check 'New Page After' for the group footer .|||Hi there. Yes, that is exactly what I would like to do! How do I go about changing the group options? (sorry, very new to crystal reporting and working with pre-packaged reports that I am trying to modify) I found the section info yesterday and had tried the new page after the group footer, was missing the first step though :)

Thanks very much for your help!|||That's OK, I'm new to Crystal too.
To change the group options right click on the group header/footer on the left of the design view and choose 'Change Group'. You'll find the 'The section will be printed' bit on the Common tab, and the 'Repeat Group Header...' bit on the Options tab.|||Tara,

Just to note, the 'Repeat Group Header...' bit is only required if one day's worth of data spans more than one page and you want the (same) date repeated on each page.

dynanic report with checkbox control

hi all ,
(Using C#.net) there are 4 fields (name , family name , ave , stNumber )in my table . for this , in my form(form1) I've 4 CheckBox Controls . I want to take a report whenever the user select one or two or ... of them . for example , if the user checked CheckBox1(for the name field ) and CheckBox2(for the family field) , In outpout report show , name and family . how can i dot with crystal report ?
plz help me .In Form1 I've a checkbox control . I created a parameter in crystal report .
this is my code :
in btnReport_Click :

{
string strQuery = "SELECT Name FROM MyTable";
sqlconn.Open();
daAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter(strQuery, sqlconn);
SqlCommandBuilder scb = new SqlCommandBuilder(daAdapter);
da.Fill(DatatSet1.MyTable);
//Definitions
ParameterField paramfield = new ParameterField();
ParameterFields paramfields = new ParameterFields();
ParameterDiscreteValue discreteval = new ParameterDiscreteValue();
//setting
paramfield.Name = "Name";
discreteval.Value = ??
paramfield.CurrentValues.Add(discreteval);
paramfields.Add(paramfield);
crystalReportViewer1.ParameterFieldInfo = paramfields;crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = crystalreport1;
sqlconn.Close();}

I want to take a report from all of records' Name field of the Table When The user checked "CheckBox1" Control .
plz help me in this :
discreteval.Value = ??
thanx|||You can use global variables

Public gblnShowName As Boolean

In Command button Sub, set the value

If chkShowName.Value = vbChecked Then
gblnShowName = True
Else
gblnShowName = False
End If

Then inside the report code section,

If gblnShowName = True Then
Report.NameField.Suppress = False
Else
Report.NameField.Suppress = True
End If

I normally code like this in VB6, hope it works in .NET also.|||hi,
It doesn't work .|||at last it was solved .
in report sheet , right click on any field , and select Format Object and then checked on suppress CheckBox . after that , in Form1.cs , in btnShowReport_Click , write this :
myCrystalReport1.ReportDefinition.Sections[2].ReportObjects["firstname1"].ObjectFormat.EnableSuppress = false;

Dynamicly displaying Page Header and Page Footer

I need to show or hide Page Header and Footer on the last page of a report
based on a parameter. Is there a way of doing this?
Thanks in advanceIt seems that you can't dynamically choose visibility for the header or
footer. It's either on or off. But you can control the visibility of
elements on the header and footer.
Create a footer. Set DisplayOnFirstPage and DisplayOnLastPage = Yes
Add a rectangle. Add controls to the footer inside the rectangle.
On the Visibility parameter of the rectangle, type
=IIF(Globals!PageNumber>1, False, True)
If your report stretches over 2 or more pages, you will see the content of
the rectangle on page 2 and out. You can change the expression according to
your needs, this was just a quick example.

Dynamicly create report

Hi All,
I would like to create report like below:
For example: I have a stored procedure spDeptEmp, which has a Dept ID
as input parameter, Once the Dept ID has been passed in, I will get
all the employees on that dept. The question is: I would like to
generate the report, which will display each employee's detail
information, one person per page.
Could you let me know how can I do that using reporting services?
Thanks in advance!
--BillWhat do you mean by dynamic? I don't see the report being dynamic (i.e. that
you show different columns at different times or some such thing). It seems
to me that you are just returning different data depending on the parameter
but the format/layout etc of the report is unchanged. Everything you
describe here is very vanilla report generation for RS. You can easily add
page breaks, you can easily have a query based on a parameter.

The dynamic means you don't know how many employees inside one dept.
until you get the input parameter(dept ID). Different dept. will have
different number of employees. i.e. the report will be different.
Also, for one employee's information, it will come from different
dataset.
Thanks,
--Bill|||What you are wanting to do is exactly what RS is designed to do quite
easily. If a simple matter of here is a dept, list all employee's
information with page breaks between them. That would be a single
parameterized query with appropriate grouping and page breaks. If it is more
a master detail type report then subreports will do what you want.

Dynamicly build report against Reporting Services

Hello Every one,
I would like to know if it's possible to dynamicly build report againt
RS ?
Thanks alots
Best Regards and seasons greetings!
Patrice Lamarche
Groupe Conseil OmnitechPossible but not that easy. Here is what you have to do today. First, you
need to learn the rdl specification (you can find that on MS site) which is
XML and create the report yourself. Then you have to deploy it using web
services. Since it is a server based solution you have to deploy it with a
unique name so that only the user you want to use it uses it. So, two things
skills you have to have for this: web services and creating the rdl on the
fly. With Yukon there will be both a winform and webform control that will
work with the server if it is there but does not require it. In theory (I
have not use it since it is not even out in beta yet) you should be able to
give it the rdl. So with Yukon you at least do not have the hoops to jump
through on deploying the report you generated.
What are you wanting to do that requires dynamically building the report. If
it is data you have the option of filtering the data based on the user.
Also, there are many many places that expressions can be used in the report
that allow a degree of dynamic changes to the report.
My advice is only go this route if you have to.

in the past. The customer wanted to have a report with sections which are
shown on demand, that is the user could select which sections she wants to
see. To minimize development effort, I decideded to have a report template
which has all the sections. Then, it was just a matter of loading the report
RDL in XML DOM and removing the section elements you don't need. I addition,
I had to take care of re-positioning (moving up) the remaining sections to
fill in the emtpy space left by the deleted sections.

Hope this helps.

Dynamicaly switching between 2 datasources for a report in order to switch between the pro

I have 2 datasources, one for the production and one for the development
database and I use 'SetReportDataSources' to switch between the 2
datasources. Unfortunately 'SetReportDataSources' permanently switches the
datasource for the report on the Report Server. So, if before the 'Render
gets called another process switches the datasource for that report, the 1st
one would run with the wrong datasource.
Anyone know any way to do this without having to write a custom 'Data
Processing Extension'?
Thanks,

2. You can write a stored procedure that uses other databases on the same
box, use OPENROWSET, or use linked servers

"Operation could not be completed. Some resource(s) may have been removed."
I have installed the GOTDOTNET workspaces.

Dynamicaly add charts to report

I need display some processes (lines in a chart) in the report. One process
per chart. The number of processes is not known at the design time and is
defined by the result of the underlying report query, so I do not know how
many chart objects to place on the report at design time. Is it possible to
add charts dynamically to the report during the run time?
Any hint would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.Maybe this will help!
I create a group (detail) line and I add a chart to this group by defining a
chart in one of the text boxes...
hen do the normal things with a chart - but the chart is automatically
GROUPED for you based upon the results of your query (in line or T-SQL)
